What is it like to wear Invisalign?
This is a question we often get asked by patients curious about straightening their teeth with Invisalign. Invisalign uses a series of thin and clear trays to gradually move your teeth. Each tray gently moves your teeth towards their final position.
When you first put in an Invisalign tray, it will feel quite snug, and although there is seldom any discomfort, you will feel pressure on your teeth as the tray gets to work. This initial tightness soon goes away as your teeth start to move, but it's important to keep wearing the aligner until it is time to change to the next one. This is because your teeth are still moving, although you won't be able to feel it, and if you move to the next aligner too soon, it will not be able to work as your teeth will not be in the right starting position. When you first start wearing Invisalign, you may get a slight lisp as your tongue gets used to the aligner. This often sounds much worse to you but don't worry; this soon goes away.
To get the best out of your treatment with Invisalign, it's important that you wear your aligners for around 22 hours per day and only remove them for eating and drinking. At first, this new routine will take some getting used to, but quickly, you won't give this a second thought. All of our Invisalign patients tell us that they very quickly got used to wearing their aligners. They were surprised at how discreet they were, and most of their friends and colleagues didn't realise they were having their teeth straightened.
