We are committed to providing high-quality NHS orthodontic treatment to eligible children. NHS orthodontic care is available to under 18s who require orthodontic treatment for dental health reasons such as severe crowding or protrusion of the teeth. Unfortunately treatment for more cosmetic problems is not usually available on the NHS.

Anyone under the age of 18 is eligible for a free assessment to determine whether they qualify for NHS treatment. Your dentist can arrange for an NHS referral to us.

During your free consultation, your teeth will be assessed using a set of measurements called the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). Some of the dental problems that typically qualify for NHS treatment include:

  • Missing teeth
  • Protrusion of the teeth in excess of 6mm
  • Severe crowding of the teeth
  • Abnormal bites that cause problems with eating and drinking

The British Orthodontic Society’s website has more information about the IOTN. Click here to find out more.

If your child does not qualify for NHS treatment, you can appeal via your referring dentist or could consider getting their teeth straightened on a private basis.
